Public Business Law Insolvencies and Restructurings

PwC Legal appoints new partners in Hamburg and Stuttgart

PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal AG Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft (PwC Legal) is appointing two new Partners on July 1st 2019, expanding its expertise in restructuring and public business law: restructuring expert Christian Abel is starting at our Hamburg office, while Dr Nicolas Sonder is joining the Public Business Law team in Stuttgart.

Christian Abel joins Advisory Services in restructuring in Hamburg

Christian Abel, lawyer and merchant banker, is moving from Norton Rose Fulbright LLP in Hamburg where he has worked since 2017. While he was there, he was responsible for setting up an insolvency law team covering the whole of Germany, and dealing with clients in insolvency proceedings with debtor-in-possession arrangements, among others. From 2009 to 2017 he worked at White & Case advising on insolvency and restructuring, first as an Associate and latterly as a Local Partner. Prior to this, he gained wide-ranging experience as chief restructuring officer and interim manager for insolvency administrators, and as construction finance advisor and agent in the restructuring management department of a major German bank.

Three team members are moving to PwC Legal together with Christian Abel. René Schulz will be joining on July 1st as Senior Manager. Britta Pancek is moving to PwC Legal as Senior Associate on the same date, and another lawyer will join the team later.

Dr Nicolas Sonder joins the Public Business Law team in Stuttgart

Dr Nicolas Sonder, lawyer and expert in public business law, is moving from KPMG Law, where he worked in the public sector division – latterly as a Partner. PwC Legal will also make a new appointment to the team at managerial level at a later date. Nicolas Sonder focuses on advising public sector clients in Baden-Württemberg on public business law, and also lectures on this area of law.

At PwC Legal, Nicolas Sonder will drive the expansion of the Public Services department from his base at the Stuttgart office. One of his key tasks is to provide advice and assistance at federal, state and local level on digitalisation projects – for example, relating to broadband rollout, digitalisation of administration or smart cities. He can draw on the wide network of local tax experts to provide a complete advisory service.

Dr Steffen Schniepp, Managing Partner at PwC Legal commented on the appointments: “We are delighted to be gaining a lawyer as experienced as Christian Abel in Hamburg. He brings with him not only extensive expertise in advisory services but also experience from industry. He will expand our restructuring practice and insolvency-related advisory services. We have also appointed Nicolas Sonder to strengthen our team in Southern Germany: our public-sector clients’ digitalisation projects increasingly require an interdisciplinary and strategic consultancy approach – and we now have another expert in precisely this area on board.”
