PwC Legal advises Klinikum Augsburg on its conversion into a university hospital

Frankfurt am Main, July 15th 2016

PwC Legal provided Klinikum Augsburg with comprehensive advice on its conversion into a university hospital. As the responsible body of the hospital, the Hospital Administration Association of Augsburg (Krankenhauszweckverband Augsburg, or KZVA), which covers the city and district of Augsburg, is the contractor.

PwC Legal has guided the KZVA through the entire conversion process since 2014. Initially, PwC Legal investigated several options for the conversion in an expert opinion. On this basis, the city and district of Augsburg decided on a state model: responsibility for Klinikum Augsburg shall be transferred to the Free State of Bavaria and the hospital shall be operated as an institution under public law. It will be the sixth university hospital in Bavaria. Since 2015, PwC Legal has supported the KZVA in the negotiations with the Free State of Bavaria on the terms of the nationalisation. On July 8th 2016, the German Council of Science and Humanities ruled in favour of the establishment of a faculty of medicine in Augsburg.

In close cooperation with the PwC Legal lawyers, experts from PwC advised the KZVA on the economic aspects of the conversion.

The Klinikum Augsburg is one of the largest hospitals in Germany and the only maximum care hospital in the region of Bavarian Swabia. The academic teaching hospital has more than 1,700 beds and approximately 5,000 employees.
