Steffen Sühnel returns to PwC, bolstering the State Aid Law practice group

Berlin, October 18th 2019

PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal AG Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft (PwC Legal) is consolidating its state aid law capacity with the return of a familiar face: in October 2019, economist Steffen Sühnel joined the State Aid Law practice group led by Jan Philipp Otter in Berlin, having previously been working at EY GmbH in Berlin. In addition to reviewing general matters of state aid law, his duties will include providing economic analysis of state aid cases and registering state aid with the European Commission.

Steffen Sühnel has been dealing with funding and state aid issues and grant registration for more than 20 years. He started as a state aid officer for the European Commission in Brussels, before continuing his career at PwC and EY. Steffen Sühnel’s clients include automotive manufacturers and suppliers, companies in the chemical and aerospace industries, banks, and public sector clients. In addition to his work as a consultant, he is the author of numerous specialist articles and a co-author in the current Nomos commentary on EU state aid law.

Jan Philipp Otter, Head of the State Aid Law practice group, says: “In EU state aid law in particular, our clients expect legal and economic advice – ‘law and arithmetic’ – from a single source. Steffen Sühnel’s proven economic expertise, his excellent reputation in the market and his experience with the European Commission will make him a significant asset to our team.”

The State Aid Law team is part of the PwC Legal Public Business Law practice group. It brings together all areas of law relating to regulated markets and services that are in demand and/or provided by the public sector. This includes – in addition to state aid law – energy and antitrust law, public transport, public procurement law, and water, waste and wastewater management. The PwC Legal Public Business Law practice group is one of Germany’s strongest practices in this field. Within the PwC network, the practice group also cooperates closely with the auditors and consultants at PricewaterhouseCoopers GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft and benefits from their commercial and economic expertise.
